The following information was transcribed from FHC Microfilm #183193 and contains the Lulbegrud Baptist Church Minutes of Clark and Montgomery County, Kentucky 1793–1804 and Minutes of the North District Association of Baptists 1802–1805

Constitution of Lulbegrud Church

On the third Saturday in March, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three, we United Baptists being the number of twenty, were constituted a Gospel Church of Jesus Christ founded on the unchangeable word of God which endureth forever he himself being the chief cornerstone holding justification in the sight of God alone by the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ, believer baptism by immersion final free severance of the Saints in Grace.

Also the general judgment whenever he will judge the world in righteousness by the man Christ Jesus and the righteous will be received to glory and the wicked will be punished with everlasting destruction from the glory of his power! The office work and religious solemnities of the occasion was performed by Elder Thomas Ammons and Andrew Tribble, aged ministers of South Kentucky Association.

On the third Saturday in March one thousand seven hundred and ninety three, we Baptists being in number twenty were constituted a Church of Jesus Christ believing that the Old and New Testaments contain and is the word of God and that they are the only infallible rule of faith and practice and believe that they hold fourth the pardon of sins and justification in the light of God is only by the righteousness of Jesus Christ believers baptism by immersion and the
Lord’s Supper.

The Final perseverance of the Saints through grace to glory a day of General judgment wherein he will judge the world in righteousness.

The righteous will be received into glory and that the wicked will be turned into Hell and there to remain through all eternity.

Church met and after prayer proceeded to business.
Whenever one member trespasses against another the offended shall go to the offender and tell him his fault alone before he pr she divulges it to others but if the offender shall not give satisfaction to the offended he, the offended, shall take with him one or two more of the members of the church and if the offender shall fail to heaqr them the offended shall tell it to the church and if the offender shall neglect to hear the church he shall be excluded, but no matter one against another shall ever be admitted into the church until the offended shall have acted with the offender as is above directed.

The church agreed to adopt the rules of decorum as read this day and ordered that they be recorded.

1803 March 19th

At a church meeting held on Saturday the 19th day of March 1803.
After singing and prayer the reference respecting Sister Nancy McGuire was taken up and the church decided that she be excluded and remain no longer a member of this body and whereas Brother John McGuire and his wife Nancy have obtained joint letters of dismission and have not yet given their memberships to any other Baptist Church it is ordered that Brother McGuire deliver to the Clerk the aforesaid joint letters upon doing which the Clerk is ordered to give him a letter of dismission for himself if requested.

At a church meeting held on Saturday the 16th day of April 1803.
After singing and prayer.
Brother Jilson Payne and sister Duliena Payne his wife were received as members of this church by letter.
The church received the book provided by Brother Clerk for the use of the church price 4/6 and appointed the Clerk of this church and Brethren John Summars, Jilson Payne and John Treadway Jr or any two of them with the Clerk to revise the minutes and orders of this old church book and record the same in the new church book.
Brother John McGuire delivered to the church this joint letter of dismission for him and his wife and declined taking one for himself and so his membership is with us as heretofore.

At a church meeting on Saturday the 21st day of May 1803.
After singing and prayer.
Brother James French produced a letter from the Baptist Church on Otter Creek … was received a member of this church.
Ordered that the Clerk certify the same to Otter Creek Church.
Brother Jacob Morris and his wife Mary Morris at their request are dismissed from being members with us.

1803 June 18th

At a church meeting on Saturday the 18th day June 1803.
The church adopted the rules of decorum as read and examined this day and orders them to be recorded and that an order entered on our church book on the 3rd of April 1794 directing in what manner one member shall deal with another on any matter of distress or trespass – before the same is brought to the church be annexed to and considered a part of said rules and that the rules of decorum adopted the 19th day of February 1803 be null and void so far as they differ from the decorum adopted this day.

The church agreed at their next monthly meeting on Sunday afternoon to have the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper administered.

1803 July 16th

At a church meeting on Saturday the 16th day of July 1803 –
After singing and prayer – Ordered that Brother Jilson Payne be added as Trustee to those formerly appointed for this purpose of building a meeting house.
Brother John McGuire having transgressed the scripture direction and violated a rule of this church by opening a difficulty he had with a Brother publicly in the church before he had privately dealt with the offending Brother was called on to answer for his conduct and was excused by the church.

1803 August 20th

At a church meeting on the 20th day of August 1803 –
The church agrees to appoint these members (to wit) Brethren James French, Jilson Payne and William Orear to attend Mount Sterling Church in conference on this Friday in September next and also to be our messengers and bear our letter to the association to be held at Blue Ash on the first Saturday in October next and that the Brother Clerk with the assistance he may call on prepare a letter to the association and have it at our next church meeting.

Brother French chose Moderator.
A door was opened for the reception of members Brother Peter Dewitt and Sister Massey Dewitt his wife was received by letter.
Brother Noah Henry having been charged with intoxication it is therefore directed that Brethren Abraham Miller and William Orear wait on him and cite him to attend next church meeting.
There having been a charge of intoxication exhibited against Brother Edward Williams – it is therefore directed that Brethren Jilson Payne and Anthony Griffin wait on him and cite him to attend next church meeting.

At a church meeting held on Saturday the 19th day of May 1804 –
After singing and prayer –
Brother French chosen Moderator.
The church having taken up the reference respecting Brother Noah Henry and he having given satisfaction to the church he is therefore restored to his former standing.
The amendment to the 11th article of our rules with the reference respecting church dealing is postponed till next church meeting.
The reference respecting Brother Edward Williams is postponed till next church meeting and that Brethren Payne and Griffin notify him to attend.

At a church meeting held at Lulbegrud Schoolhouse on Saturday the 16th day of June 1804 –
After singing and prayer chose Brother Summars Moderator –
The church proceeded to act upon the reference respecting Brother Edward Williams who made acknowledgement upon which he was tenderly admonished and restored to his former standing.
The church proceeded to act upon the reference respecting an amendment to the 11th article of our rules as refers to church dealing and the same was agreed to.
Sister Charlotte received by letter.
Agreed that this church have communion at the July meeting.

At a church meetinng held at Lulbegrud Schoolhouse on Saturday the 21st day of July 1804 –
After singing and prayer chose Brother Bledsoe Moderator.
On motion it is directed that Brother Peter Dewitt and Sister Massay Dewitt his wife have letters of dismission.
Also directed that Brethren Payne and French be appointed to prepare a letter for the association for the inspection of the church at their next church meeting and Brethren Payne, French and Orear be appointed our messengers to bear our letter to the association at Stone Meeting House on Howard’s Creek in October next.

1804 August 18th

At a church meeting at Lulbegrud Schoolhouse on Saturday the 18th day of August 1804 –
After singing and prayer chose Brother French Moderator.
Brethren Payne and French who was appointed last church meetinng offered a letter which they had prepared for the church to their next association which was read and agreed to and ordered to be signed by the Moderator and attested by the Clerk.
Also the church agreed to furnish one dollar to procure printed minutes of the association.
On address from Mount Sterling Church expressing their wishes to unite with this church in building a meeting house for the use of both churches was taken up.
The church agrees to appoint Brethren Abraham Miller, Jilson Payne, John
Treadway Jr, John Summars Sr and James French to consider the address from Mount Sterling Church and make report to next church meeting.

At a church meeting held at Lulbegrud Schoolhouse on Saturday the 15th day of September 1804 –
After singing and prayer chose Brother Barrow Moderator.
The committee appointed to consider the address from Mount Sterling to Lulbegrud Church made a report and on the question being taken the church agrees with their committee and appointed Brethren Jilson Payne, James French and Abraham Miller their Committee to meet a committee of Mount Sterling Church to look out and agree on the spot of ground to build a meeting house upon and if they agree on the ground to … on the plan to prosecute said building and report to our next church meeting.
Also directed that Brother William Orear inform the Mount Sterling Church at their next church meeting of the same.

Rules of decorum

Read and adopted 18th June 1803

1st That each meeting shall be opened by singing & praying.

2nd That the members present shall have power to do baptisms.

3rd That at each meeting a moderator shall be appointed by one member nominating and that nomination meeting with a second. But if a third objects to the nomination, the Church or the members present shall determine who shall be moderator.

4th That it shall be the duty of the moderator to keep order State and take Questions when called for. He shall not speak to a matter in debate without leave and another person previously called by him to act as moderator nor shall he vote in the discussion of any question except in the case of action order. Subject to an appeal to the church at the request of others who may be present to take seats with us and assist us in our deliberations. But such members are not to vote when two or more rise at the same time he shall name the member that shall first speak. He shall sign the minutes of the day and the Clerk shall attest them.

5th That in the reception & reclusion of members or the choice of Minister, Elders or Deacons, these must be unanimous of all present but in all other cases a majority shall decide.

6th When a member is about to speak in debate or deliver any matter to the Church, he shall rise from his seat and address himself to the Moderator.

7th No member shall speak more than twice to the same subject without leave of the Church and shall strictly confine himself to the subject under deliberation.

8th No member shall … between the member speaking and the Moderator. Neither shall any member absent himself without leave nor conduct himself in a way tending to divert his own attention or that of others from the subject under investigation.

9th When a motion is made and seconded it shall be attended to and brought to a decision unless withdrawn by the member who made it or set a side by a previous Question. But no other business shall be introduced while the subject of such motion is depending unless it shall be a motion for adjournment which shall be always in order.

10th When a question is put the sign of approbation or disapprobation shall be for the members to raise a hand and the affirmative side of the question, always called for first.

11th When ever one member trespasses against another the offended shall go to the offender and tell him his fault alone before he or she divulge it to others. But if the offender shall not give satisfaction to the offended he the offended shall take with him one or two more of the Church members of the Church and if the offender shall fail to hear them the offended shall tell it to the Church and if the offender shall neglect to hear the church he shall be excluded. But no matter of … shall be admitted into the Church until the offended shall have acted with the offender as is above directed unless the Church shall otherwise direct.
